Attributes

Several attributes are recommended for a change champion to be successful in their role. This person is required to work closely within their teams and be a key motivator for change.

Attributes beneficial to the change champion are the abilities to:
  • Communicate effectively, including being skilled in networking and conflict resolution (Warrick, 2009).
  • Value the team and develop relationships with key individuals (Warrick, 2009).
  • Motivate, inspire, coach, and keep the team focused to the vision (Warrick, 2009).
  • Overcome barriers to change and create supports (Warrick, 2009).
  • Support, encourage, and lead the team through change (Warrick, 2009).
  • Persevere with the change project to completion while demonstrating progress (Warrick, 2009).
  • Have "facilitative leadership qualities" (Shaw et. al, 2012).
  • Be able to see key opportunities and be able to take a risk (Shaw et. al, 2012).
  • Be trustworthy (Porter Lynch, 2012).
  • Be respected and have the ability to influence the team members (Pickering, nd.).
  • Have a strong knowledge base in the nature of the business with substantial problem solving abilities (Jenssen & Jorgensen, 2003).
